| Islington is the central district of the London Borough of Islington. It is an inner-city district in London, spanning from Islington High Street to Highbury Fields, encompassing the area around the busy Upper Street. The name is now also often applied to the areas of the borough close to Upper Street such as Barnsbury, Canonbury, and De Beauvoir Town, developed in the Georgian era. Islington grew as a sprawling village along the line of the Great North Road and has provided the name of the modern borough. This gave rise to some confusion, as neighbouring districts may also be said to be in Islington. This district is bounded by Liverpool Road to the west and New North Road to the south-east. Its northernmost point is in the area of Highbury. The main north-south high street, Upper Street splits at Highbury Corner to Holloway Road to the west and St. Paul's Road to the east. The area round Angel tube station is sometimes considered a district in its own right, The Angel, Islington. The northern part of this area (from the Liverpool Road junction northwards) is within the district of Islington, while the southern half is in neighbouring Finsbury. The area below Penton Steet and east of Pentonville Road is the adjoining district of Pentonville, but still with the borough of Islington. Pentonville is famous for the men’s prison. Pentonville prison was the prototype for a radical design by Major Jebb. Pentonville was completed over 150 years ago and has remained in use ever since as a local prison. Although much refurbishment has taken place the original four cellblocks are as they were when the prison opened in 1842. Pentonville's execution facility originally consisted of a purpose built shed in one of the exercise yards and contained the gallows beam brought from Newgate. Execution sheds were the norm in most British prisons, after the abolition of public hanging in 1868, and typically had the trapdoors installed over a 12 feet deep brick lined pit, as drops of up to 10 feet could be given. They were often used as a garage for the prison van when not required for executions. The Angel area in Islington is well known for its Art Culture.
